Tutorial Heaven: Philip Straub’s tutorials

Saturday, October 25th, 2008 | Filed under Inspiration, Lessons, Resources

Tutorial Heaven will be the title of a series of articles dealing with tutorials done by other artists rather than myself. We’re starting off with Philip Straub (PhilipStraub.com) who is Electronic Arts’ Concept Art Director with many valuable tips to share on composition and colour that will be useful in manips just as well as in paintings.

  • Composition:
In this tutorial, Philip Straub explains the basics of composition – from the Rule of Thirds to the use of implied forms. A must-read for anyone who is into art: Composition Tutorial.
  • Colour Theorie:
Using colour to your advantage is not only of concern to painters, but to photomanipulators as well. Philip Straub offers some valuable insights in his tutorial Colour Theory Simplified (the tutorial can be downloaded in pdf format).

You can read more about Philip Straub on his website as well as in This interview. He also has a deviantArt account.

This is great that you have posted this. I am more than honored to be able to get two free tutorials from this man. I have been a fan of Philip Straub for the longest time. He is such a Talent and his works are awe-inspiring to those of us who wish to become more detailed in our works. I first discovered him through the CG & It’s Art article’s that featured Justin Lassens Music that he *painted* to the art of some of the most thought provoking artists ever, including, Nykolai Aleksander, Linda Bergvist, Alexander Casteels, Erlaend Mork etc… Nykolai is featuring some tutorials as well in the November and December issues of It’s art mag as well ;) We are so lucky to have such Talents that are willing to share with us even a small amount of their talent & secrets.Awesome post hon <3
